Susan Rice’s artistic journey began with a foundation in architecture, a discipline that continues to influence her creative approach to printmaking. She earned degrees in Environmental Design and Architecture from the University of Kansas and began her career with Seligson Associates Architects in Kansas City, Missouri. After relocating to Wisconsin, Susan discovered printmaking as a medium that allowed her to merge her architectural sensibilities with a more intuitive and expressive process.
Her work often reflects the structural clarity of her design background, interwoven with the organic forms and textures of the natural world. Influenced by a lifelong interest in weaving and tapestry, Susan integrates layered patterns and geometric rhythms into her monoprints, collagraphs, and experimental prints. She works from her home studio in Mequon, where she uses a Tackach etching press to explore the interplay between order and spontaneity, simplicity and complexity.
Susan was mentored by Cedarburg artist Paul Yank, whose guidance helped her refine her technical skills and creative direction. She frequently exhibits alongside fellow printmakers who studied under Yank, participating in numerous local, regional, and national juried art shows.
Represented by the Idea Gallery in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, Susan continues to expand her body of work. She lives in Mequon with her husband, Steve, and enjoys time with their three grown children and three grandchildren.
